Do You Need a Business Plan?
It would be pretty difficult for you to find a source that offered business advice that did not emphasize the importance of planning. In spite of the sound advice promoting it, many small businesses continue to operate without a proper business plan.
I came across a quote some time back in an article I read on the need to develop a business plan. Unfortunately, I don't remember the source, so I can't give the individual their due credit for saying it. The quote went something like this: "a person who fails to plan is a person who plans to fail."
If you are an avid believer that planning is a waste of time that could be better spent running your business, then you won't find much wisdom it this quote. In fact, I'll admit it; you don't need to plan in order to operate a business. It's not like the lack of a business plan dooms you to failure by default. As I said at the beginning, many small business continue to operate without a business plan.
Of course, you aren't really planning to succeed either. You may be able to manage to keep your business up and running by making enough right decisions based on "gut instinct" and good guesses. But are you really developing your business to its fullest potential, maximizing its success? If you feel that your business is constantly struggling, or if you are frustrated because you can't seem to get that extra push to get your business to take off, you may need to reconsider your need to develop a business plan.
