What Programs Do I Use

Most operating systems include a backup utility as part of the package. Unfortunately, these are usually rather simple programs that do not offer advanced features for backing up data. These utilities are fine for initial backup of your system, but I would suggest getting a third party backup program that can offer you more choices in your backup performance.

The basics that you should look for in a backup program is that it is user friendly, reliable, and it supports the backup media (tape drive, removable disk, etc.) you plan on using. It should also be able to verify that your files have been backed up error free. Beyond that, the additional features are pretty much up to you. Some of the additional features you could look for are:

  • Password protect profiles
  • Two-way directory synchronization
  • Multi-media support
  • More scheduling options
  • File compression
  • File encryption

  • There are many third party backup programs available as either commercial programs, shareware, or freeware.        E-mail this article
